A Saban State of Mind by (Chris Scott England)

The Alabama Crimson Tide in 2008 returned to elite status in the national spotlight. This was expected when the University signed Nick Saban. The question is can the Tide maintain the momentum created in the 2008 season. With an unceremonious loss in the Sugar Bowl some question if the Tide has lost focus under Coach Saban. However one would only have to spend a day watching the fall practice in Tuscaloosa to know Alabama is focused and ready. With a year under his belt Julio Jones should lead an impressive offensive attack. But Coach Saban's bread and butter is his defense which will be anchored by nose guard Terrence Cody (6'5 345) and cornerback Javier Arenas opposing teams beware. Arenas also is one of if not the best return men in the country. Double digits wins should not be a problem in 2009 but in Tuscaloosa it's not about wins it's about National Championships. Twelve are in house the last in 1992 to long ago for Tide fans. Bear Bryant still casts a large shadow on the campus. Coach Saban understands the tradition and has the team ready for a run at number thirteen. September 5 in Atlanta, Ga. against Virgina Tech Tide fans will know if the Tide is high in 2009.
