Mobile, Alabama has again been assigned the official label A Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Mobile was the first Tree City USA in Alabama becoming one in 1979. To become a Tree City Mobile met four standards a Tree Board Department, a Tree Care Ordinance, a Community Forestry Program and an Arbor Day Proclamation and Observance.
In becoming a Tree City USA Mobile will recieve direction in urban and community forestry programs. These programs help the city guide its officals towards annual and systematic management of trees. Mobile will now go on the Arbor Day website listed among the other cities in America bringing more good attention to the city.
The city will benefit in education making the Forestry Commission staff available to the teachers within the city. The city can call on the commission for videos, literature and technical advice. The public image is also improvded. The Tree City USA signs at community entrances tell visitors to the community the city cares about its environment. It has been known that organizations have more conventions in Arbor Day Tree Cities.
The city will now be in line to get more financial assistance from the Forestry Commission in the way of federal grant money. The reason is the state and federal officals have more confidence in a Tree City USA. Also Mobile will now recieve free publicity from the Arbor Day Foundation in all the literature it produces and distributes throughout America. Tree City USA is supported by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program.
